You can get the Serene Painting when you talk to Redd for the first time. Isabelle will notify you that a shady boat and character have appeared, and it's none other than the black market art dealer Redd.

Jolly Redd’s Treasure Trawler will occasionally come ashore to your island, full of in-game art to sell. Be careful though, not all his art is necessarily genuine. It’ll be up to you to determine which is real or fake! #ACNH pic.twitter.com/3f53iUs9z6

When you talk to him in town, he'll offer a painting at an outrageous price. You haggle down, and he offers it for a substantially lower price. This painting could be the Serene Painting, and it's worth getting because it unlocks a new wing for your Museum.

The painting itself is based on the real world Lady with an Ermine by Da Vinci. If you're trying to spot the fake one, the ermine looks more like a raccoon than the all white fur it's meant to have.

Once you've bought the painting, you can donate it to Blathers. He'll then go about creating a new wing for the Museum, the Art Gallery. This is where you'll donate genuine artworks from Redd.

Some pieces Redd sells are fake, but the first one he sells seems to always be genuine. Grab it and start a new journey for your Museum.
